Steve Cromity, just like the title of his CD, is Steppin' Out. A new voice on record, but a most seasoned one in experience. Born in Brooklyn, Steve says he gained his first exposure from the sounds of Bird and Diz and Trane, coming from the downstairs jazz bar in his neighborhood. His jazz awareness is quite evident in his phrasing and sense of chord structure. Steve sings with an ease and fluidity of a seasoned professional. A very sensible selection of material, some of the best standards out there, along with some great backing. All this lends to a superb offering. A wise selection of tunes, definitely substantial, all show his knowledge of what appeals.

Opening with "Just Friends", a tune brought to the jazz awareness by Charlie Parker, Steve renders a lightly swinging rendition, aided with a bright tenor break by Eric Wyatt, and fine comping from Rodney Kendricks and the rhythm section. "Speak Low" and "You Go To My Head" are well known standards that are given a new life by Steve's rendition. "Invitation" is a song that has become a favorite instrumental vehicle in jazz. Here Steve offers the vocal version backed by a subtle Latin beat. I am pleased that "Star Eyes" is included in this CD, if for no other reason than it was a favorite of Charlie Parker. Steve pays it proper justice. We have here an intelligent spacing of ballads and up tempos all done with some excellent backing.

Speaking of the backing, Steve once again demonstrates taste in choice. Eric Wyatt on tenor came to my attention several years ago while I was doing jazz radio. Sonny Rollins highly recommended him, so I played his new CD. I was impressed.

Eric cut his music teeth under the guidance of his father, sax legend Charles Wyatt, then went on to work with such names as Roy Ayers, Jimmy Heath, Nicholas Payton, et al. Pianist Rodney Kendricks was made known to me through Amiri Baraka who had a tape of Rodney's first recordings. Baraka said, "Dig this young guy out of Philly." Rodney comes from a rich background of blues, gospel, and soul, and you can sense all this in his playing. Bassist Joseph Lapore, though born in New York, spent much of his early life in Europe where he studied as well as played with some of the leading foreign musicians as well as visiting Americans. Returning to the States in 1999, Joe has earned an outstanding reputation. Listen to his work on "Miss Jones." Drummerman Emanuel Harrold hails from St. Louis, home of much blues and soul. He brings this to his playing. He was seasoned in playing in church as well as in small jazz groups. Self taught at an early age, he has, since coming to New York, enrolled in The New School to pursue his degree. He has played with the likes of Rene McLean and Anthony Wonsey. Emanuel is a tasteful yet quite forceful addition.

So what more needs to be said? Steve Cromity brings a polished voice, an acute jazz awareness, as well as a distinct choice of favorites.
